I'm sure many of the game show fans that post here already know, but for the more casual fans around . . . The Game Show Network is having a show on the Press Your Luck scandal on Sunday March 16th at 9:00. I'm really looking forward to this.
Selection Sunday, Press Your Luck scandal and the VH-1 coverage of the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Busy night of tv!

I think the real scandal is the guy got screwed out of 80 grand by CBS. So he figured out the pattern. If they were dumb enough to allow someone to figure it out, its their own fault.
I'll pay $49.95 for the Execute Bin Laden PPV. And I'll buy one of the lottery tickets at 10 bucks a pop to be the executioner.
I thought he got the money, because CBS decided to cap the amount after the show. If they just screwed him out of the money after he won it all, he would one phone call away from an open and shut lawsuit.
I, too, remember seeing the original airing of that one on CBS. When the video stopped and a chroma-keyed Peter Tomarken walked out in front, I knew we were onto something big.
And where the hell is Teppan-Yaki in all of this? He's the one with the ultra-cool animated PYL avatar...

He DID get the money. The rule on the prize cap was that you could not be a returning champion after hitting it, but you kept anything you won over and above it on the way to the cap. That was a longstanding rule typical of most game shows or networks.

God -- this and the LJ icons compliments; I'm so gracious!... You mean this one, right?
Anyway, the episodes have been on the tape trading block for awhile, and I had them. I think the scariest thing about the whole event was Peter Tomarken chromakeyed on the end of the first episode/beginning of the second episode. Not fun as a young kid.
As for Larsen, he did get the money; he just blew it away, IIRC.
The night also coincides with new Whammy! episodes starting that Monday. Color me unimpressed.
Good on the lad. More power to him. But really, 6 combinations and they thought it would be fool-proof. These people deserved to be screwed.
We're currently going through our own little game show scandal over here. Some boy on Millionaire allegedly had somebody in the studio 'cough' a code at him to let him know the right answers. Some of the transripts of the show are hilarious.
Example:
Contestant: "I think its A" *Silence* Contestant: "But then again, it could be B" *Silence* Contestant: "But then I've got a nagging feeling it could be C" From Audience: COUGH COUGH Contestant: "Yep I'll go for C"
