Oh dear me. BEST. EPISODE. EVER.

I cried, I was moved. I even cried for KIM.

I'm all in awe.

George Mason must have the best character exit of all time.

The only way this episode could have been any better would have been if it was Kate that went down with the plane.

But, even though she didn't die(again!) this was easily one of the best episodes ever. Maybe not THE best, but top 5 material.

I cried too for the phone conversation. Trying to determine now which of the two phone calls was sadder, this one, or the one last season in the next to last episode(I think) when Jack was talking to Teri, fully expecting that he was going to sacrifice himself for Kim.

3 weeks? Damn you American Idol! Damn you straight to hell!

If there was ever a good reason to keep us in suspense for three weeks, I think that about takes the cake. I mean seriously, when's the last time a tv show closed with a huge nuclear explosion?

Best episode this season. Great emotional stuff all around. President Palmer looking out to see the rising mushroom cloud was my highlight. I can't imagine what would be running through a President's head while looking at that. He had a good facial reaction to it. George gave a real nice talk to Jack too.

Great stuff. Can't wait for three weeks.

Sledgehammer, season finale, although I forget which season.

It was the first season finale if SledgeHammer! that ended with the explosion, with the second season starting '5 years earlier'.

An incredible episode filled with mark-out moments galore. Jack/Kim. Jack/George. Palmer watching the explosion out of the plane's window. An easy BEST. EPISODE. EVER. from a show that's had several strong candidates. All the previous episodes get you thinking. "Nah, Jack won't die....but they have killed off (laundry list).

2 straight episodes with intelligent actions from Kim? The mind boggles.

The Comic Book Guy in me wonders how Jack could have survived being so close to the explosion. The distance of the explosion was visible would seem to indicate that this wasn't a dud or a dirty bomb.

The official body count stands at 74. May Zoroaster bless you, George Mason.

What an awesome episode.

Lots of classic scenes.

George Mason ruled.

I think that new CTU guy or Michelle is going to turn pretty soon.

Anybody know who the VOICE was during the preview of the next new episode?

Seriously, I was practically bawling at the Jack/Kim phone conversation.

Not sure who the voice was in the previews. I would guess it's a new character, since we've turned a corner in this season's plot line. Maybe he's the real villain in all this.

What a great episode tonight. I had an intramural game at 9:30 (the show is on at 8 here), and I was supposed to pick up my friends at 9. No way that happened.

All of the sudden, I'm screaming at the TV, "Jump, Jack! Get the hell out of the plane!" And I even felt bad for Kim, for a few minutes. Although now she is lost again. I hate it when they make me wait 3 weeks for the next episode.

There was a point when I was actually thinking Jack might actually die, and Tony would be the new 24. That's how good this episode was.

We all knew from the point that Mason became ill that he would go out doing something truly heroic...and damn they didn't disappoint.

I am so in awe of the work they did on his character arc, evolving from the scared weaselly guy running away from impending doom to the guy who gives it all to save others.

I was also touched by Kim watching the mushroom cloud in the desert, thinking that her father had perished with the explosion. And thank god she has finally developed some sort of functioning brain.

If he was upwind and outside the main fallout zone then he should be ok. The plane still had 15 minutes of time to fly away from Jack and was ditched in a valley which should provide a decent amount of shielding.

And oh yes this was one awesome episode. My only problem is about the hints they were giving about who was really behind the attack. I fear the end result might be a bit hokey but could set up a nice season 3.

I am kind of confused on how far away Jack is from the explosion. Jack said he was going to stay with George until the last possible moment, indicating he would jump with four minutes left. So they cut to George and Jack with 5 minutes and change, Jack asks George if there is anything he can do and then jumps. The show immediately goes to Palmer with the clock at 10:58. The bomb goes off less than two minutes later. There are about two minutes missing from the time Jack jumped to the cut to Palmer. It was the first time I ever noticed anything like that on this show. It's pretty nitpicky but still confusing.

That was an unbelievably good episode. Even the Kim scenes didn't suck. If tonight was any indication, her character is really going to start growing into being more like her father and less like her stupid mother. I actually thought it was cool when she shot out that window. She knows how to use a gun now, all she needs to do is learn how to take out 9 troopers armed with only a flare gun and a stick.

I'm surprised they waited until the 15th episode to go all out with the nuke. I thought they'd do it closer to the halfway mark, but it was well worth the wait. The exchange between Jack & Mason really put everything back into perspective and it's Mason's sacrifice that gave Jack a reason to continue living. It also foreshadowed what will take up the rest of the season, the pursuit of who is behind the bomb. This was the real turning point for the season. It took a lot of balls to pull this episode off and they did it.

We're pretty much where we were at last season after Jack rescued his family and took out everyone at the Gaines compound. Last night resolved the "There is a nuclear bomb somewhere in LA" crisis and now we move closer to finding out who is really behind it all, which probably won't be revealed till 7AM-8AM. Mike.

I think we'll see Nina again within the next two hours, escaping in the midst of a widespread panic that is sure to erupt after seeing a nuke go off so close to LA. The nuke crisis has been resolved, so now Palmer must live up to his end of the deal.

While I don't know for sure, I think it was pretty apparent that the guy in the previews for next week was Col. Saunders. Mainly because he appeared older (unless they used a different video clip in editing) and talked with your typical southern accent commonly seen in the military and the White House.

I don't know what motive he could possibly have for blowing the whistle on the big conspiracy to Jack, but I think that's the guy.

FUN FACT: The interiors for Air Force One were the same ones used in the movie Air Force One, according to a recent interview with Dennis Haysbert, who was in the movie along with our hero, George Mason.

I noticed earlier in the episode that the clock was at 10:12 before commercial. When we were retruned from a 2 minute break, we were greeted by 10:17. There's roughly three minutes more. I hadn't noticed this in any other episodes, but that's probably a result of just not catching it. I'm sure this isn't the first time they've used the Royal Rumble clock.

Oh yeah, bitchin' episode. I wasn't too emotional for the Jack/Kim exchange because I knew he would survive. I was hoping Mason had snuck onto the plane, but they let it go just long enough to where I doubted he was there. Briefly, I theorized that, at the last minute, Jack would simply smirk at the bomb at it would shut down under the smirk's awesome might.

Yeah, there's always a few minutes missing, since the hour starts at the top of the hour, but has to end between :57 and :58 so they can put in more commercials and previews for next week.

Edit: Actually, the hour doesn't start at the top of the hour, because of the Keifer monologue, and the previouslies.

See what happens when you let Moby try to disarm your bombs?

There's no way to properly eulogize the late George Mason, other than to note his place as one of America's Greatest Heroes alongside Washington, Lincoln, Ted Williams, Batman and William Katt. Some guys will take a bullet for you, but how many are willing to take a 10 kiliton nuclear detonation for you? Just two, apparently.

Right up to his final minutes, he got to be the awesome snide jerk that made him so great, with the "The service on this plane is bad enough, you don't have to shoot me, too!" line when he revealed himself on the plane. I hope I get to go out just like him. Except without the painful, fatal radiation poisoning and the nuclear explosion. Anyway, I've been down with George Mason since the episode where he and 24 discovered the hidden Lou Diamond Phillips Prison last season, and he managed to get even better over the course of this year, vaulting him into the lofty heights of Frank Pembleton and Albert Rosenthal as my all-time favorite TV characters, especially those who are also jerks, but in a good way.

His death also gets to rank somewhere up there with the death of Roy Fokker on the tragedy scale, but assuming everybody doesn't die in the remaining nine hours, the "24" universe will likely have a national "George Mason Day" holiday every year, since he saved the free world and all, so, you know, I'm cool with it. It's only fitting to honor him with a day where everybody would get off from work or something. That was a kick-ass death, though. The only thing that maybe could have made it better is if he'd somehow been listening to "Slow Ride" or maybe "Are You Experienced?" as he flew the last four minutes alone. And maybe his ghostly image could have been superimposed over the explosion.

How great an ending was that, with all the major characters looking up at the explosion? I mean, holy crap, they actually had the bomb go off, and there's still over a third of the show left. Seeing Palmer, Jack and Kim all watch the explosion was a good way to sum up where they are now, in a non-geographic sense. 24 had his moment to grieve for the only guy as cool as him while in the air (divers leave their goggles on), and when he hit the ground, he was already in business mode, knowing that it's about time he got back to shooting people in the heart.

Palmer knows that he's on the brink of global disaster and has to finally get control of his administration back. This was a great episode for some subtle work for Dennis Haysbert. His demeanor in the "just so you jerks at home don't write the network asking why they didn't put the bomb in the Pacific" debriefing scene, sort of pleased with the relative lack of devestation that would happen, was a nice set-up for the gravity of later getting information that he may have to go to war.

His best scene, I thought, was the interplay between Mike and Palmer when he stopped to ask who ended up flying the bomb out. You could tell that Mike knew the answer was going to crush him (again, it's wonderfully hard to get a read on what side he's on) and Palmer's reaction, knowing that the only person he can truly trust had essentially volunteered to give up his life on Palmer's behalf for the second time in a day was very well done.

The whole beginning of Kim's segment this week started out funny, with the evil looking bikers driving down the road, followed by the shady guy in the car. They should have kept it up, with a whole line of traffic made up of progressively more sinister vehicles with passengers more likely to kidnap her. I was hoping the guy in the car would be revealed as the cougar in disguise. Then, out of nowhere, she gets a really great scene in the lady's SUV, on the phone with 24. That was good stuff, almost up there with the George Mason/John Mason scene in the 2-3 pm episode. Since George Mason mentioned his son to 24, they should have Jack train John Mason to be his eventual successor, possibly called 48. Spinoff!

Tony going all "What about us Americans?!" and backing that guy down was a step up for him. He's got a lot of work to do if he wants to fill the George Mason void or catch up with Palmer or 24, but I think he can really get started by growing back the soul patch now. And he probably needs to avoid getting sexily caught up in the sexy lesbian sexual sex harassment (w/sex) that Michelle and Carrie clearly have in their past. Their SEXUAL past.

As for what the future holds, I couldn't make out the guy in the previews claiming to have proof that the international conspiracy is a sham, either. The way the scene was shot, giving a glimpse of his reflection in the rearview mirror, I would imagine it's someone we've seen before.

That could make it Colonel Samuels himself (there was some question, I think, in last week's thread about who got shot by the recovery team when they found the bomb on the truck - it had to be the third terrorist who split when Marie showed up and not the seventh Coral Snake member, who would be Samuels himself, right?) and he'd end up being the Andre Drazen of this season. There's still got to be someone higher than him, whoever Nina works for, to fill the Victor Drazen spot. At least, that's the feeling I get.

The other person it could be is my season long dark horse for the remaining intelligence agency mole in the series, Ryan Chapelle. I honestly can't remember what he looks like anymore, but we do keep hearing about him and he's been floating around since the beginning, with access to CTU's flow of information from the start.

Three weeks. Damn.

Awesome post once again, Dr Unlikely.

You know what my first thought was at "The VOICE" in the preview for next time? Didn't he sound a lot like the sleazy guy from Palmer's campaign last year? The guy with the sort of evil Kevin Space vibe? Karl, I think his name was. I'm guessing it's him. If the people from Palmer's campaign are trying to sabotage his presidency (and why wouldn't they be, after Palmer got the better of them last season?), wouldn't getting him to go to war with innocent nations be a pretty good way to sabotage it?

I don't have the preview on tape, so I can't compare the voice with my dvds, but it sounded like him to me.

I thought the bomb exploding was an interesting plot decision, since most people had expected that to be closer to the conclusion.

I thought Palmer looking out the window was cheesy. Was he looking for Slim Whitman?

Those who listened to Kornheiser know he wasn't happy with the episode. (and I got to hear him rantng all day about it.) We also figured out that Kifer was about 12-15 miles away from the bomb, figuring the speed of the plane and when Jack jumped.

Here's my official Prediction for Season 3:

Jack fights Giant Irradited Ants in the desert.
