I stumbled upon this article from the Torch, and I think it's something that every Internet Wrestling person (fan, columnist, board administrator, EVERYBODY) should read. It's about Wrestlemania, and it's simply self explanatory.

That was disappointing. I was expecting a preview of Black Scorpion vs. Papa Shango.

There is something about WrestleMania that's hard to explain for me. Ever since I was 8 I've been ordering WrestleMania, and for some reason I have weird WrestleMania related dreams leading up to the event. Every year, for one night, I become a little kid again, and I can't wait for March 30th (Or if you're Michael Cole, "March 28th")

I still remember getting excited to see the Warrior vs Hogan at Wrestlemania VI (back off I was young), and begging my parents to let me rent old wrestlemanias whenever we went to the video stroe. This is the first time in five years I will be watching this without my usual crew of friends (damn grad school), but I will sit and enjoy, and mark out all night. Its one of those few times each year that age reverses. I can see myself when Im 60 still cheering for my favorites like I was 10 at this spectacle.

I'm glad we all see the beauty of that article. When I read it, I just had to share it with you guys. I have quite a few memories of WM myself. I forgot which Mania it was, but when The Ultimate Warrior won the WWF Title, my older brother screamed like a wildman. He was big on Warrior at the time, and did great imitations of him. He just went nuts, leaving me with a hell of a headache for the next few days, LOL.

Of course, my favorite Wrestlemania memory so far is only 3 years ago, when I told some of my buds that I thought that HHH will keep his WWF title. They all looked at me like I was nuts. However, when all was said and done, they had to treat me and the family to a full course Italian buffet, PLUS a weekend in Atlantic City, MWAHAHAHAHAHA!! ::ahem::

Anyway, I'm just glad we all are getting good vibes from the article.

Due to my age and preferences growing up, Wrestlemania is no Starrcade.

But looking back through the years, there were not that many good/great Starrcades. Especially after the turnover from Crockett to Turner.
Starrcade '83: The first, in the good to great territory.
Starrcade '84: Way overbooked, disappointing.
Starrcade '85: Despite the Dusty finish at the end, still was great because of Magnum/Tully and Rock 'n Roll/Russians. Probably the best Starrcade.
Starrcade '86: Good, could have been great. Magnum's car crash probably kept it from kept it away from great.
Starrcade '87: Ron Garvin was in the main event. Enough said.
Starrcade '88: Steiner beating Rotundo for the TV Title shows how important a secondary title can be. In the good category.
Starrcade '89: Beginning of the concept shows. Had the potential for greatness. Instead, it was a disappointment.
Starrcade '90: Take away the Black Scorpion bullshit and it could be considered great. But, Ole Anderson was around, thus Black Scorpion bullshit.
Starrcade '91: BattleBowl 1, another concept show.
Starrcade '92: BattleBowl 2, great way to make the key show look meaningless by making it a concept show.
Starrcade '93: Saved by Flair/Vader.
Starrcade '94: Ed Leslie in the main event. If thats not a justifiable reason to hate Hogan and Company, I don't know what is.
Starrcade '95: Great matches, but a concept show on a weeknight.
Starrcade '96: How can a World Champ have a main event match and its not a title defense?
Starrcade '97: The screw-up that began the avalanche.
Starrcade '98: Have taser, will travel.
Starrcade '99: Russo was booking.
Starrcade '00: On the death spiral.

So, while Mania was the premiere event for Vince, from '89 on Starrcade was generally a weak PPV for Turner.

Fascinating stuff. Starrcade wasn't as readily available in as many places as Mania was, also. After the 80s, it wasn't as big as it was before. Still, I respect what OdessaSteps is saying. My other older brother (not the Warrior fan, the Flair fan), prefers Starrcade too. To each his own.

I'm an old NWA fan, so Starrcade in the 80's was special. However, once Turner took over, it became the #4 PPV in terms of importance/quality of the year behind SuperBrawl, Bash at the Beach, and Havoc. Sadly, the only thing Starrcade in the late 90's would accomplish is beginning the decline and death march of WCW.

One item from the article caught my eye - that Lesnar debuted the night *after* Wrestlemania. If WWE has truly signed Goldberg, might they do the same with him?

Perception vs. Reality. I'm only talking about the former, since I thought that was the jist of the topic.

To me each means this:

Wrestlemania -- Gaudy Spectacle, stupid celebrities, Hogan going over someone

Starrcade -- blow-off to feuds, above-average wrestling, Flair working his stuff in the title defense main event

Yes, Starrcade after the Turner take-over wasn't the same. The magic began to lose its luster with the goofy tournament in 1989, where Muta jobbed out and went back to Japan.

I have to agree, WrestleMania is definately better of the two shows. I mean, in 2001 with Rock/Austin, I marked out big time!!!! And last year's Hogan/Rock, do not even get me started on that! Good god I thought I was 10 again! It will rock this year as I live in Seattle and I am going to be at Safeco Field, where the view is awesome, no matter where you are. As the counter says, there are lots of seconds until WrestleMania and I hope that there is something magical about this years show.

I was always a bigger StarrCade fan, personally. What with just being an all around WCW mark all my life, I would always pick that over the WWF, despite watching both. Of course this will always be looked at just like Coke vs. Pepsi, everyone has their preferences so no one is truly right or wrong due to personal attachments to either PPV.

I always loved WrestleMania. It just seemed...classier. More mainstream. Cooler.

I mean, Steamboat/Savage and Hogan/Andre will forever be two of my favorite matches. And Rock/Austin. Both of 'em. WrestleMania is "The Showcase of the Immortals"...and Starrcade was "The Best Matches We Could Come Up With"

Am I the only who thinks many Wrestlemanias have...Well, sucked? I am the biggest wrestling mark in the world. I'll debate anyone on its legitimacy, but one thing I never do is try to convince people that wrestlemania is this great wonderful event.

In the old days, it was the culmination of a year of storylines. Today, not so. Where's the bridge b/n Booker T and Edge in a shampoo match and Booker T and Trips in the main event a year later? I think this show gets glorified.

There are Starrcade arguments but I think Wrestlemania's major advantage over Starrcade is, firstly the fact that it still happens every year, and two, the promotion of it. The mainstream effect. I love that its a word everyone knows, a part of our vernacular.

But as for it being a special time, and each one giving us great memories; nah. Not so much for me. Since the double-digit manias began, those have been few and far between. I thought 10 was awesome but then a long-line of suck began. 11 left me with no good memories whatsoever. I recall not a single good match, and the embarassing loss of Bamm Bamm to LT. Then there was Nash's botched powerbomb on HBK. 12 had a yawner of an undercard and then an Iron Man match which was boring holds and then superior work till the bell. That was good, but it didn't save that show for me. 13 had the Austin/Bret match, but again, one good match on the "grandaddy of them all" kind of...Blows. 14 was the "golden era" return, mainstream B.S. and Tyson and whatnot, yet it didn't yield one match that lived up to that hype. I admire that Shawn worked hurt, but he wasn't the Shawn of old as he worked hurt. No one could have been, so that's fine, but it wasn't a homerun match. 15 was more of the same, solid main event but cruddy undercard. 2000 had the ridiculous "heel goes over" main event booking that made me want my money back.

X-7 was the only good 'Mania, for me personally, since 10. That had many good matches and the big stadium look really enhanced it. The main-event was a classic encounter booked to perfection. X-8 was back to the same crap. A shitty show, I'd say, except for the memorable Hogan/Rock match.

I don't buy 'Mania hype, not anymore. I always hope it will live up the hype, but I haven't believed it could for years. Though, looking at this year's card...I gotta say...It could be awesome...

I dont think that was the point here though, we're talking about an alleged "magic" surrounding the events. Sure, if you look at the booking and get all mad, then you can easily says it sucks, but when I think of WrestleMania, I think of the feeling that goes along with the event. When WrestleMania hits the air, and I see 55K (or however many) fans, I KNOW that this is THE event. It could be Godfather vs. Shawn Stasiak, and it would feel 100x more important than it would on Heat. Not to say afterwards I wouldn't be a little disappointed, but the key phrase here is little. If I thought a Mania sucked, it almost becomes irrelevant because of the energy I get from the event.

I don't know why that is, but I grew up on WrestleMania, and it was such a big deal then. I guess it's one of those things in your childhood that sticks with you. Sticks with me longer than "eh Rock shoulda gone over in 2000, this SUCKS".

They ran the extended commercial for WM last night on Confidential. Great stuff, as always. I think the phrase "Showcase of the Immortals" gives me chills every time I hear it.

Some advice here. Whoever is still pissed over 2000 should get over it. So, you lost a few bucks, who cares? The real point is, that no matter how bad it may be in retrospect, it's what you feel while it's happening that really makes or breaks Wrestlemanias. The only Wrestlemania that really sucked for me was WMXI. I'm sorry, but did they really expect me to buy the fact that Shawn Michaels attracts GIRLS? Kidding. Seriously, there wasn't really too much going on, and to be honest, that whole LT crap was a joke. There was nothing there that really made me enjoy it, except that cute hug from Owen Hart to Yokozuna. I get chills watching that, knowing what happened to them. But, that was about it. Wrestlemania 2000 beats that by about a million trillion. Preferences aside, I truly think that if WMXIX continues the build it has going already, all the memories of the buildup of the last one will completely go away, and we'll be couting down the seconds like it's New Years Eve.

I am still pissed over Wrestlemania 2000 not because of the money, but because it pissed all over what Wrestlemania should be. Wrestlemania has always been about the end of a major storyline espically in the main event. Even in 2001, it was Austin's quest to be champion as the end and the beginning of a new storyline. Austin is champ, but at what the cost? When HHH won it was just to get the McMahon's over which I thought was a disgrace. Sure, it made HHH as the most hated heel ever, but it did the worst thing a Wrestlemania Main Event could do, prolong the fued. McMahon-Helmsley should have died that night and Rock should have been champion. It takes both Foley and Rock to destroy HHH which gets him over as a super-heel. Instead we get Vince's heel turn which results in fans turning the ring into a garbage dump. Thats not the way to end Wrestlemania.

I love Wrestlemania and I have always thought Wrestlemania was the BIG EVENT! The one PPV you should get every year no matter what. Even 2000 had some great moments like TLC I and Benoit/Angel/Jericho. I still get goosebumps when they start the show. There is a since of magic about the show laced with unforgettable images like Hogan/Andre, Michael's entrance, Austin winning the belt and Rock/Hogan. I respect Starcadde, but to me, Wrestlemania is the Greatest Show on Earth.
