This one is based off a concept called casting out 9s. At least, I think it is. I know how this one is working, and if I'm remembering casting out 9s right, its the same thing.
Check it out... for numbers from 99 - 90 your answer is always going to be 81. From 89 - 80 you get 72. 79 - 70 give you 63, and so on.
Maybe I'm wrong on the casting out nines thing (this was always more CRZ's area - math problems and such) but this one works simply because you always end up with a factor of 9 as the final answer - and the symbol at 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81 are all the same.
It kinda throws you off because they stopped the pattern there so that 100-81 would not have a repeating pattern every 9 characters - that's why it displays that column first. If they had wanted to keep this going forever, they would have had to put the '9' character at 90 and 99 as well.
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.

You probably followed the instructions incorrectly than. Because, as Guru discovered, you will always be left with the nine's... and they're all the same pattern.

Not only that -- but there will be times when the .swf reloads. I've seen the symbol for 9 change a couple of times... thus adding fuel to Guru's fire.
1. Choose any two digit number : 10x + y (where x and y are the values of the digits, from 0 to 9)
2. Subtract the sum of the digits from the number: 10x + y - (x + y) = 9x Hence, you always get a multiple of 9.
3. ???
4. Profit!!!
My personal favorites were always the ones where you start with your age, do a bunch of math which is effectively subtracting your age from the current year, and the result is the year you were born. Of course, these always ONLY work the year they are passed along.
Edit: On a side note, is anyone else having problems seeing my avatar???
(edited by EddieBurkett on 1.3.03 0133) I apologize for being a Buffy/Angel mark.

Yeah, the instructions say "Choose any two digit number". 6 ain't a two digit number
