World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. To Close Restaurant

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 25, 2003--World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. announced that effective today, it will close its restaurant located in New York City.
"We have ceased the restaurant operation as of today, but we will continue to operate the retail store until April 27, 2003," said Linda E. McMahon, Chief Executive Officer. "We will seek to sublease the facility and will work closely with the landlord's organization in this effort."

"We are reallocating resources to the continued growth of our global business, rather than focusing on a single, site-specific and local project," said Linda McMahon, Chief Executive Officer. "We will build shareholder value by continuing to create WWE branded products and programming which we can distribute on a worldwide basis."

WWE issued its third fiscal quarter earnings release today and will host a conference call Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. ET.

Mrs. McMahon lauded the effort of the restaurant's current management and employees. "We would like to personally thank each and every employee at the restaurant and at WWE for their hard work, commitment and passion for the business."

What? I won't get bad overpriced food while watching a taped Smackdown any more? How dare they!

I gotta get over to that store before April I guess. (You know that's the only place to pick up the T-shirts you really want, right?)

Can one of the better WWE apologists on the board please tell me why this should not be taken as a bad sign?

It is. I suppose this bodes ill for the Niagara Falls location too, of course.

Well, at the very least, this is good news for Edge. He can rest assured that his assignment for King of the Ring 2003 won't be to sit in a restaurant and eat a meatball sandwich, which means Billy Gunn can't shoot him in the head.

A bad sign of what, exactly? Even when business was good the restaurant wasn't exactly doing great, and with all the problems it's had (theft, poor food, oversaturated market), I'm surprised it wasn't closed sooner.

So, I suppose that, yes, it is a bad sign of the current marketplace viability of a new restaurant in Times Square (hey, don't believe me? Ask Britney, from all indications hers isn't drawing business either).

I remember the whole point of WWE going public was to expand...

XFL - Failed
Smackdown Records - Failed
Manhunt or whatever that was - Failed
Attempt to build casino - Failed
The World - Failed

I'm sure I'm missing some other things but I'm wondering if Linda and Vince are regretting going public and trying to expand.

At least they hired a new marketing guy, that should help.

I went to The World once. It was pretty cool. I felt like everything was overpriced though. Especially the WWE merchandise. Surprising that they couldn't keep it open with SOOOOOOO much traffic walking by the place everyday.

But how many people really want to go to a WWE restaurant? Apparently, not very many.

I saw the Cro-mags & Sick Of It All there this summer, and it seemed pretty decent as far as the "club" side of things; the place was really full but not so full that you couldn't get around... not really a place for a hardcore show cuz of the high stage and bouncers but for like smaller level concerts it seemed like it would be ok...

A certain notorious NYHC sketchy dude was diving off monitors and riding strangers shoulders, that was really the high point of my World experience I gotta say...

Didn't try the food.

The worst World moment were those episodes of Heat that were filmed there.

I thought the worst moment was the guy in the water tank?

You knew The World was in trouble when they started using
the same "nostril cam" technique they pioneered during XFL
broadcasts to avoid showing that the place wasn't crowded.

From the desk of Swordsman Yen
I, myself, would've opted to title the thread "It's the end of The World as we know it..."

Anyway, I think the bad sign that spf was referring to is that this joins the series of WWE follies including the company of losing millions in the XFL, the bust called Smackdown Records, losing the old company name to the pandas, the failed nWo angle, the failed invasion angle, faltering ratings, sagging attendance, and the Austin fiasco to name a few.

Given the current state of the internet, the impending death of WWE would seem to be cause for celebration.
