Boy, the injury bug strikes again, and this time, it's Edge. I know that days ago, there was news of an injury he sustained, but he needs SPINAL CORD FUSION SURGERY?! That creeps me out. I mean, did he sustain the injury in a match? Was it an accumulation of injusries that brought this about?
What an unfortunate turn of events. Right before this year's WrestleMania, and just as Edge's star has been rising to the point of becoming one of the main talents in WWE (my opinion) and he suffers this very scary injury.
What will WWE be like when he returns? Will the EEEEEE be willing to push him into the main event? I mean, that's where it seems like he was heading. I know these considerations are so much lower on the totem pole of priorities when compared to Edge's well being, but man, I just can't shake the disbelief, the-- ugh.
Dammit.
So, what do you all think? I personally think that this sucks.
Get well, Edge. All of us fans are rooting for you.
David Crockett sez it best, folks: "Look at 'im, Tony! Look at 'im!"
It does suck, because I was hoping for an Edge/Benoit fued for Wrestlemania. It really does seem the Spring bug is coming sooner than expected. Edge has the potential I just think he is too toned down anymore. If anything he can catch up with some comic reading
Sometimes these things can be a blessing in disguise. I don't mean the injury really, but the time off will probably really help. Edge had no real direction the last few months. He was just wrestling whatever random guy they had for him, with the odd feud lasting a few weeks. Even the tag team stuff him and Rey Jr. were doing a while back was never cemented that they would be a team for any length of time.
Spinning his wheels like he has been would only make the crowd get bored of him and his character over time (look at the reaction RVD gets now compared to when he first arrived). Taking time off will let everyone come back with a fresh start. When he comes back, they could throw him straight into a main event feud and because he's leaving while still in good with the fans, the "He's back!!!" reaction will be enough to generate some good heat during the match(es).

If they can bring back Edge by January, they can seriously push him as a threat to win the Royal Rumble and not derail his run to main event status at all.
But then again, he couldn't carry Albert-Train to a watchable match, so does anybody think Vince would be willing to do that?
I'm torn, actually. Hate to see anyone suffer such a nasty injury, but I really hate Edge. The shitty offense, the oh-so vanilla character, and most of all, that damn beanie.
I would'nt worry about the push. He's home grown talent, so Vince is never gonna give up on him.

RMK, thanks for the update. Although the article seems to have a couple of technical errors in it. (You can call it a "spinal fusion" or "fusing vertebrae", but I don't believe the phrase "spinal cord fusion" actually makes sense. Also, if one disk is damaged, you fuse the 2 adjacent vertebrae -- that whole discussion is a bit confused.) The article does talk about how it was sorta cumulative, with some specific things that exacerbated it, & that indeed it is the same fusion surgery that Austin, Benoit, Lita & Rhyno had. And unfortunately, It's False, it'll be a minimum of one year til the doctor will clear him completely to resume full workouts, so next year's Royal Rumble won't be an option.
I really like Edge, & this sucks big time. But the time off will give all those other nagging things time to heal completely. Its still unfortunate though.
Is anyone else somewhat scared by this? Edge is a pretty spry young guy. With the exception of Austin — who had his neck broken — and Benoit — who's spent over a decade in high-impact matches in Japan, Mexico and the states — these surgeries seem to be befalling the younger folks, too. Although Edge was in high-impact matches, he never took the same level of bumps as, say, the Duds or the Hardys. You have to wonder why this is happening.
Of course, this could be a chicken/egg thing. Perhaps these sorts of injuries have happened for years, and no one has missed time to correct them because, until recently, there has been no way of doing so. Still, it's scary.
I worry for Edge, and I worry much more for everyone who has the potential to be in his place.
This definitely sucks, but I agree that there are blessings in disguise here.
When the guy comes back, he'll no doubt get and maybe deserve 'Desire' vignettes, new character vignettes, and he'll break through to the main event right away with his post-injury push.
Did anything specific trigger this injury, or is it just the result of the last few high-impact years?

I don't think there's any need to worry about whether he'll be a main event when he gets back. I mean there are some people in the main event just hanging on and surely a year from now they'll be gone (Undertaker and Hogan i'm looking at you) so that will free up a few spots. Also I hate to say it but this time next there will probably be another main eventer injured just because it seems to happen every couple of months.
And yeah so Kanyon's return wasn't so glorious but i'm tired of hearing about that, i've already heard someone say that maybe Edge will get a great return, just like Kanyon har har like 30 times. First of all Kanyon has only made one appearance who knows what WWE has in store. Second of all that's just one person. Benoit was pushed when he returned, as did Austin, so did Triple H from his return. I'm sure they're going to do the same with Rhyno, and when Edge comes back he will too.
From what he said in the article on WWE.com, it's just kind of cumulative over time. He's felt it twinge over the last few months (once from a Kurt german suplex, another from a forearm to the back), and he slowly started losing feeling and strength in his left arm. There was no specific match he can point to, although he certainly thinks the TLC/Ladder series contributed and probably cut years off his career. He was lucky it was only two vertebrae, because, if it'd been three, his career would be plain over.
While it'll suck not to have him around, I think it's actually a blessing in disguise for Edge to have a year off. Currently, he's just underneath the top-card and probably won't have a chance to break through for a while (unless they were going to turn him heel to have a run at Lesnar this summer, which probably would've been a bad idea anyway. I like Edge as a face myself). When he comes back, though, I agree that he could easily go main event with the returning guy pop.

When Edge comes back, Hogan will be revving up his engine for Mania XX, while Taker will be looking to extend his Mania winning streak to begin his spring 2004 World Title contender push. And remember, there is no guarantee Edge returns. Remember Arn.
The only military skill provided by the French is demonstrating the methods of surrendering.
I'm sorry, but I hate Edge. I don't want people getting injured, but as far as a fan watching a show goes, I'll be better off without Edge's boring carcass prancing around with that dumb little hat. For me, he was becoming the new Rock in terms of being a horribly played, boring face.
When he comes back in a year, I agree they will do something better with him, so I have hope. He'll be fine, just like the rest of them.
The following post expresses the opinions of a raving Jerichoholic. He is biased, opinionated and bitter. You have been warned.
As I've said before, if he can come back in time, I think it would rule if Edge could beat Taker at WrestleMania 20. And, redsoxnation, I think that this is Hogna's last Mania, and maybe even his last match. Think about it. Hogan's whole career has been leading up to this match. Vince claiming to have "made" Hulkamania, The Huckster skits when he was in WCW. This has got to be Hogan's last dance.

Think of Edge's neck the next time you see a german suplex, a "locomotion" series of german suplexes, or a stereo "locomotion" series of german suplexes.
The action on SmackDown! has been better than RAW, but mainly at a cost of physical injuries to the performers. They've rolled out dangerous spots involving german suplexes for cheap pops against an uncompelling backdrop.
The key is to get back to good storytelling and include some meaningful spots as part of that process. SmackDown! has been specializing in throwaway spots which is why ratings have sunk while the internet has been applauding the workrate.
Da Eagle has arrivedYou know, as an admitted Edge-head, I am personally saddened that Edge will be out for so long, but think, ad hope that the time off will be good for him, as it'll maybe freshen his character.
