If you're a guy and a decent ball player, you've thought about it before...Could you and a team of your buddies who play at the YMCA, or wherever, *beat* a WNBA team, or a great women's college team?? The local sports talk show raised this question last night, and I'd thought I'd get some more opinions on the subject. I am of the belief that any small (NAIA, Division III) men's college team could easily handle a UConn, or a UT women's team, and could probably beat a WNBA team, due to differences in strength and athleticism...I also think a good men's college intramural team could be very competitive.

What do you guys (and gals) think? I'll chime in with more arguements from the show and of my own if this thread garners any interest.

Please don't think me sexist...I just think this is an interesting topic. :-)

Women's basketball is generally awful to watch. Watching two well coached, reasonable talented teams play each other a la UT-UConn is ok if there is nothing else on TV. Otherwise. women's hoops is death to me and a lot of other folks. People just don't care for it and I think it has a lot to do with the lack of quality play as compared to the men's game. But at least it's not as bad as women's soccer.

Americans are a resolute people who have risen to every test of our time. Adversity has revealed the character of our country, to the world and to ourselves. America is a strong nation, and honorable in the use of our strength. We exercise power without conquest, and we sacrifice for the liberty of strangers. Americans are a free people, who know that freedom is the right of every person and the future of every nation. The liberty we prize is not America's gift to the world, it is God's gift to humanity.

Also, which type of basketball is being used is important as well. Unless a women's team is able to shoot an unbelievable percentage on the 3's, I doubt they could beat a lower level Men's team because of strength on the inside.

i personally like womens soccer- hot chicks in short shorts and high sock oh yeah babY!

but seriously i read that UCONN women scrimmage against male teams and usually handle them quite easily. Granted the guys are not div 1 caliber but merely people who played high school ball and whatnot

I know damn sure I could beat Anna Kournikova in tennis!

Back in university I covered the women's basketball team for the school newspaper. I actually suited up with them (different locker room, unfortunately) and took part in a week's worth of scrimmages for a story. I played basketball in high school (starting point guard in grades 11 and 12,) but I could barely keep up with these ladies.

The head coach had just finished working with Pat Summitt in Tennessee for a year. They ran me ragged for seven straight days...and this was a Canadian CIAU school, not even a NCAA school. There's no way my buddies and I could have beaten them.

Well, this season, they probably COULD take the Huskies. I mean, losing to Virginia TECH?

Of course, this is the first game for UCONN without their head coach. And the same V Tech that beat Virginia.

-Jag

Of course, Tech has managed to lose to a whole bunch of other people (including UCONN) this year.

Year after year, the United States has gone to elaborate lengths, spent enormous sums, taken great risks to build and keep weapons of mass destruction. But why? The only possible explanation, the only possible use they could have for those weapons, is to dominate, intimidate, or attack.

Well, look at the BC game. (Unless that was the one where Calhoun announced his cancer). And Miami (FL), when they managed to blow a four point lead with seven or eight seconds left. They seem to play to the level of their opponent every now and then, too...

The following is a TRUE story.

Ten years ago while I was going to the University of California, I was always hanging out with five friends of mine. One day we went to play basketball at the Harmon Gym.

All of us were goofing off and playing 3 on 3. I don't believe any of us have every played organized basketball at any level before. Out of out group only one guy was kinda good. He was 6'3, quick, great post moves, and could shoot with either hand. Our point guard was a five foot-nothing Korean kid with a 4.0 GPA.

After 5 minutes, 4 girls approached us wanting to get into the game. We offered to put 2 of them on each team. They declined and insisted on being on the same team. They said they were tired of always playing against each other. So they took one of our guys and played 4 girls + 1 boy against 5 boys.

They had no defense against our players in the post. We were scoring almost every time down the court. They got fiesty and scratched and cloawed every guy in the post. When one guy complained, they told him to shut up. They were pissed at losing. They knew being a guy, he wouldn't call the foul. Though soon he was bleeding from both his forearms.

About 15 minutes in, I'm gassed (no stamina). So, I only play the defensive half of the court. They had a 3 on 1 fastbreak against me. I stood under the basket and blocked the shot. I noticed a crowd of 50 people had suddenly appeared in the stands and they were cheering for me. I had 3 clean blocks that game. I was even giving one blond girl good postition because she was hot...anyway...WE won 21 to 10.

After the game, 4 more girls approached us and told us to get out. They chided us for picking on the girls. We refused to leave citing the playground rule of "Winner Holds Court." After some arguments and challenges, they showed us a piece of paper. It was signed by the Dean and said that this court was reserved for Cal's NCAA team for these hours. We left satisfied in our victory.

In conclusion, to get an equal playing field, you'd have to drop about 4 or 5 levels. A WNBA team would be the equivalent of a decent high school boys team,.

Youre reaching here. Take your and your buddies and go to a UConn or Tennessee practice and you would get smoked. The "Summit Stare" alone would probably have you pissing your pants. Im not saying that I think youre lying but you couldve been playing 3 freshmen and the team manager.

I DO know one of the guys who played on the boys team that practiced against the UT women...back when they had Chamique Holdsclaw. This guy was decent by church league standards, but by no means a great player. He also said the other guys on the team weren't any better than him. They used to routinely throttle those UT women in practice. I just don't think there's much comparison.

Isn't this thread pretty pointless? I bet Tim Montgomery could beat Marion Jones in a race, too. Lennox Lewis could beat Laila Ali. Tiger Woods could beat Annika Sorenstam. THAT'S WHY THE SPORTS ARE SEPERATE. Women certainly aren't disrespecting the game or some ridiculous thing.

The Tiger/Annika match would likely be the most competitive, but I would say that Sorenstam could play damn well against anyone but Tiger and maybe Ernie Els. But golf is much more subjective, a handicap is a handicap, and if you utilized those, the Sorenstam/Woods match would be extremely competitive.

This thread reminds me of a Nike commercial from a few years ago where the premise was Dawn Staley and a couple of the other players from women's Team USA went to a park to play 3 on 3. They said in the commercial, "We didn't win every game" or something to that effect. With that said, however, I don't believe an "average" high school team could hang with a top notch D1 NCAA women's team, much less a WNBA team.

Edit/Addendum:

I'd safely bet that the graduation rates on the women's teams are much higher than those for the men's teams and for the vast majority who never move to a higher level, isn't that the true barometer of a succesful collegiate career?

The Only way that Annika could beat anyone on the men's field is that if they played on a very short course.

If you were to take a state champion h.s. men's basketball team (or at least a contender) and put them up against a WNBA team, my money's on the guys.

The University of Illinois womens team has no walk-ons.

They have a team of men they practice against.

Coach Theresa Grentz is a Hall-of-Fame coach.

Take that for what it's worth.

I think that game would be as competitive as it gets...As long as the high school team doesn't measure 6-8, 6-7, 6-7 across the front line or anything like that.

We'll probably get to see if/when she plays the Colonial. My guess is she'll make the cut, but I'd bet the farm that she doesn't miss the cut and finish dead last. Length just isn't as much of a factor in golf, Tiger is still long, but he has played better since he's given up some of his distance. (Of course this is a basketball thread, sorry...)

You guys aren't forgetting how much further up the women's tees are, are you? I say there's no way she could make the cut from the men's tees. Not saying she'd finish dead last, but close.
