"Interesting" new policy? More like self-delusion, if ya ask me. I quote:

Wrestling Observer, by way of 411
A new policy in WWE is that wrestlers are now supposed to be in character at all times. This is another extension of recent management belief that the exposing of the business is hurting WWE.

No word yet on how WWE wrestlers are supposed to act on Confidential, where they have been breaking character to comment on a variety of subjects.

They do realize that it's too late for that, right? Who cares how the wrestlers act in the parking lot? It's over... adjust to the times, don't try to burrow back into your hole.

This was all started by Hunter getting in Vince's ear about kayfabe and Confidential ruining his heel run. Now the WWE pinheads have it in their brains that exposing the buisness is the real reason they're freefalling. Didn't Vince take pride in exposing the buisness on Costas's show?

I say, yet again, how much does the WWE have to bend over backwards to get Captain Caveman over?

You know, I think it is a good idea- granted people are not going to buy it as much at first, but eventually, it would settle back into the norm- I mean, kayfabe is one of the most important aspects of the buisness!
I KNOW wrestling is an act, "fake" if you will. I do not need the wrestlers slipping out of character every chance they get to remind me of this. Hell, it might do some good to have the workers in their character's "mindset" more than the 20 or so minutes a week that they are in front of the audience performing...

Maybe that's the reason B2 got fired. If anybody worked for a corporation in some sort of customer service, the big company sends plants and pretend their customers to see how you handle them... So maybe they send a plant to him at the parking lot to start up a conversation and not once did B2 yell "BooYah". And that's the last straw and he was firrrred.

Who gets most to gain out of this. Stevie Richards, anytime anyone walks in visual distance no matter who it is even a 80 year old woman who can't even stay up past 7PM let alone watch Raw, Steivie grabs Victoria and starts making out with her "Uh no remember we HAVE to stay in character, We Have To!" Even if she's not looking that way "We better be safe then sorry"

Nice to see that Bill Watts has been rehired. Considering the three guys who did the biggest job in killing kayfabe are on the roster (Nash, Michaels, Trip), I doubt this will last long. But, nice to see Vince yet again going with a WCW early 90's idea. Keep hope alive Fred Ottman, the Shockmaster will be returning soon.

edit: Of course, if one were to use a strict constructionists view of kayfabe, then Trip and Steph would no longer be allowed to date, as according to kayfabe they are divorced and despise each other. And, who is the one who has to break the news to Torrie Wilson that her father must die in order to protect the sanctity of kayfabe.

You know who's really hurt by this? Guys like Edge and Test who don't actually -have- much of a character. How are they supposed to stay in it when no one seems to know what it's supposed to be?

I'm glad they're protecting the bubbles of the 2 percent of the marks that still think it's real.

So are wrestlers not gonna do talk shows any more? Or will they return to smacking guys like John Stossel who question their "sport's" legitimacy.

Good storylines, less soap opera. That's how you get back on top. Not by continuing to insult your fans intelligence.

It's just so sad to see how dellusioned WWE is nowadays. They do everything in their power to avoid blame for their problems. I believe kayfabe was broken just as bad as nowadays back in 1999, one of the WWF's most successful years ever. They just refuse to accept blame for the problems they've created and fix them. Vince is not stupid, and deep down, he knows what the real problems are, but refuses to let go of his pride, and in the meantime, they're making more mistakes and burying themselves in a deeper hole. It reminds me of what Scott Keith said in his 1993 WCW rant:

For the want of a nail, a shoe was lost
For the want of a shoe, a horse was lost
For the want of a horse, a message was lost
For the want of a message, a battle was lost
For the want of a battle, a kingdom was lost
All for the want of a nail

That might not be exactly how it goes, but the point still stands, that when you don't pay attention to the little mistakes, they're going to blossom into one huge mistake. That's exactly what's happening to WWE. The thing about Edge not being able to carry Albert to a respectable match is bullshit, as his match with Albert was 10-times better than Undertaker's, and Undertaker is still going to get a big push. Triple H and Scott Steiner had one of the worst matches I can remember, and are both getting the main-event slot for next month's PPV. Undertaker's matches last year were the shits, as was Triple H's, and they're both in the main-events. This kayfabe thing is also a bullshit excuse. Do they really think that if they stop breaking kayfabe, people will be more interested because they might actually accept pro-wrestling as legitimate? Kayfabe has been destroyed for years. How come it's just now started to affect business in a negative way? Answer: Kayfabe has absolutley nothing to do with the success or failure of WWE- PERIOD! Vince knows how to turn this ship around. Deep down, even if it involves something he doesn't like, he knows what to do. All Vince has to do now is swallow his pride, and do it.

Weren't wrestlers required to always be in character before, up until...um...I dunno, a few years ago (with few being 5-7)?
(correct me if I'm wrong)

I dunno. I like to think that the wrestlers are good performers, both in the ring and on the mic, and can be a good person despite being a total heel when performing.
I know this technically doesn't change that, but it'll seem like it does if the character extends past the screen.

But, whatever works. I wouldn't really mind it either way.

(also wondering about the credibility. I dunno the news sites you guys post, so I have zero knowledge about what's trustable and what's not.)

I would love to see this policy applied over the broader spectrum of entertainment. Think of the fun you could have if you ran into say a "Sopranos" cast member in public. Or if you ran into Ian McKellen you could demand that he use his funky staff and ask why he's not wearing his wizard hat.

Seriously, this is just goofy. The fans want a good show, good stories, and good in-ring performance, done by characters who they can get into and cheer or boo. If they could provide that, the way they did a couple of years ago, no one would be complaining at all, and they would be doing much better than they are right now.

Good to see that Scott's a Todd Rundgren fan; the quote you recalled -- and I'd love to see a link to it [Edit2]: which is Click Here -- that SK did is from "Want of a Nail" off of Rundgren's "Nearly Human." OK album, but that discussion's for another forum.

[Edit] For clarification's sake, because SK was close:

For the want of a nail, the world was lost
For the want of a nail, the world was lost

For the want of a nail, the shoe was lost
For the want of a shoe, the horse was lost
For the want of a horse, the rider was lost
For the want of a rider, the message was lost

For the want of a rider, the message was lost
For the want of a message, the battle was lost
For the want of a battle, the war was lost
For the want of a war, the kingdom was lost

Anyway, why try and go back to kayfabe when the kayfabe's been smashed into pieces? This, of course, now means that Glen Jacobs will have to wear his mask all around like Mr. Destroyer II thanks to VKM.

I don't think the masked wrestlers would have a problem, because most ppl wouldn't recognize them, except maybe Rey Mysterio. I feel sorry for Eddy, who will have to keep his accent all the time now. Or what about Shannon Moore who will have to walk around kissing up to Matt Hardy in public? Or Rikishi, who would have to be fat... oh, wait.

Does this mean that if I get in a fight with Funaki, he'd be forced to lose?
